Two ways to speak. Two different writing workflows.
Apple already includes Dictation with macOS. Elokin is not trying to hide that. The difference is what happens around transcription: model choice, output profiles, vocabulary, privacy controls, and a workflow designed for people who dictate throughout the day.
The short answer
Use macOS Dictation if you want a built-in way to speak into a text field and do not need another app. It supports customizable shortcuts, multiple languages, punctuation commands, and—depending on your configuration—may process general dictation on-device.
Use Elokin if dictation is a core part of your workflow and you want dedicated downloadable models, a hold-to-talk gesture, reusable writing profiles, vocabulary lists, and explicit separation between local processing and optional cloud providers.
Neither choice makes the other unnecessary. The right question is whether you only need speech input or a configurable voice-writing workflow.
Feature-by-feature comparison

Apple changes macOS over time, so built-in Dictation features can vary by operating-system version, language, region, and Mac model. Check the current Dictation section in System Settings for the behaviour available on your Mac.
Where Elokin adds value
Profiles turn speech into a chosen kind of text
A transcript is not always the finished result. Spoken language contains repetitions and changes of direction. Elokin can preserve it exactly, polish it, make it concise, translate it, or send the transcript through a custom instruction.
Vocabulary belongs to the workflow
Elokin provides visible vocabulary categories with bulk text-file import. That is useful for developer tools, company terminology, product names, and people’s names that appear repeatedly in your work.
The local/cloud boundary is explicit
Built-in transcription and profiles use local models. A custom cloud profile is a separate choice with a provider that you configure. This makes it easier to understand when external processing is—and is not—part of the workflow.
Where macOS Dictation is the simpler choice
Built-in Dictation has one unbeatable advantage: it is already on your Mac. There is no separate purchase, model manager, or onboarding flow. Apple also lets users dictate directly at the cursor and, on Apple silicon, continue typing while dictating.
If your needs stop at occasional speech input, adding a dedicated app may not improve your day. Elokin makes more sense when you frequently dictate longer thoughts, switch output styles, work with specialist vocabulary, or want control over the local models used by the app.
For accessibility-driven voice control of the entire Mac—not just writing text—Apple Voice Control is the appropriate system feature. Elokin is a writing utility, not a replacement for macOS accessibility controls.
How to choose
- Start with macOS Dictation if your priority is zero setup and direct insertion.
- Choose Elokin if you want local model selection and reusable processing profiles.
- Choose Elokin if technical or company vocabulary is central to recognition.
- Use Apple Voice Control if you need to operate the interface by voice.
- Try the workflow that creates the least friction in the apps where you actually write.

Frequently asked questions
Does Elokin replace macOS Dictation?+
Not necessarily. macOS Dictation is already built into the operating system and is a good choice for straightforward voice input. Elokin is for people who want dedicated local models, output profiles, vocabulary management, and a hold-to-talk workflow.
Is Apple Dictation processed locally?+
Apple says you can check the text below Dictation in Keyboard settings to see whether general Dictation is processed on your device for your configuration. Availability and processing can vary by language, region, hardware, and context.
Can both use a custom keyboard shortcut?+
Yes. Apple documents a customizable Dictation shortcut, and Elokin lets you record separate shortcuts for dictation and profile switching.
Which option is better for occasional dictation?+
If you only need to dictate a sentence occasionally, the built-in macOS feature may be all you need. Elokin is most useful when dictation is a frequent writing workflow.
