Turn spoken ideas into text, without breaking your flow.
The best speech-to-text workflow is the one you can start without leaving the app you are using. Elokin lives in the macOS menu bar, listens only when you hold your shortcut, and turns your voice into text processed locally on your Mac.
The quickest speech-to-text workflow on Mac
Speech-to-text is most useful when starting it feels easier than opening another editor. A global shortcut lets you begin dictating while you are writing an email, preparing a document, taking notes, or composing a detailed prompt.
- Place the cursor where you are working and hold the Elokin shortcut.
- Speak the complete thought instead of editing every phrase as you go.
- Release, then paste the copied transcript into the active app.
This push-to-talk approach avoids continuous listening. It also separates the act of thinking from the act of correcting punctuation one word at a time.
Built-in Mac dictation or a dedicated app?
macOS includes a useful dictation feature and it may be enough for occasional sentences. A dedicated tool becomes valuable when voice is part of your daily workflow and you want more control over models, shortcuts, output style, privacy, and specialist vocabulary.
Elokin lets you choose between a literal transcript and several processing profiles. Raw preserves what the speech model produced. Polished improves structure and punctuation. Concise reduces repetition. Translate to English converts supported spoken languages into English text. You can switch profiles with a configurable shortcut.
The important distinction: speech recognition decides what words were spoken; a profile decides how those words should become useful written text.
Make dictated text easier to use
Natural speech is not identical to writing. We pause, repeat ourselves, change direction, and rely on tone in ways that do not translate neatly to a text field. Post-processing can turn that spoken structure into readable writing.
For a quick message, you may want only punctuation. For a product brief, you may want paragraphs and a clearer structure. For an AI prompt, preserving details can matter more than making the text short. Elokin’s profiles let you select that intent before you speak rather than manually rewriting the same transcript afterward.
Improve recognition with custom vocabulary
Names, product terms, acronyms, and development frameworks are often the hardest words for general speech models. Elokin provides vocabulary categories for general, development, company, and custom terminology.
You can add terms individually or import a UTF-8 text file with one term per line. Imports can merge with the current category while removing duplicates, or replace it completely. Default dictionaries can be restored without reinstalling the app.
This is especially useful when you repeatedly dictate the same unusual names or technical language. The vocabulary gives the local recognition workflow better context while keeping the list on your Mac.
Choose the right model and language
Elokin does not bundle large machine-learning models inside the app. You download the model you want during setup or from Settings. This keeps the App Store download smaller and makes storage a user choice.
For language handling, automatic detection is convenient when you switch between languages. Selecting a fixed language can be more consistent when every dictation is expected to use the same one. Elokin currently supports 30 transcription languages, including English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, and others listed in the app.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert speech to text on a Mac?+
You can use the dictation built into macOS or a dedicated menu bar app such as Elokin. With Elokin, hold your configured shortcut, speak, release, and the locally transcribed result is copied for you to paste.
Is speech-to-text different from audio-file transcription?+
Yes. Speech-to-text dictation is designed for short, live input while you are working. Transcribing meetings or existing audio files is a different workflow and is not Elokin’s primary purpose.
Can speech-to-text clean up punctuation and filler words?+
Elokin can keep a literal Raw transcript or use local Polished and Concise profiles to improve the result after speech recognition.
Can I dictate in more than one language?+
Yes. Elokin supports 30 transcription languages and can detect the spoken language automatically or use a language selected in Settings.
